If I have to plan a moonshot project for which historical benchmarks don't
exist, I would start planning by defining the final goal and finish line. Once
I've articulated a desired end state, I can start identifying the steps needed
to get there, as well as define the benchmarks I can use in order to gauge my
process.

Example, I was asked to develop the SW strategy for a new team that I had
joined. Our goal was to maintain and expand upon partners who used IA as their
platform of choice in transportation. That larger goal laid the groundwork for
how I could create a strategy that would lead to more hardware sales

Step one was to access what software toolkits existed that matched the IoT, ML,
and computer vision solutions that were commonly used in industry.

Step 2 was to access existing market research regarding the most significant
needs of our customers

Step 3 involved imagining how the software "played" with the hardware in a way
that encouraged customers to continue to build with it, as well as what might
encourage others to adopt it.

Using this information, I mapped out the categories of end customers that needed
to be targeted.

The overall group of reference designs would map to the collective SW package
that needed to be offered to target customers.

The specific custom options had to map to the specific solutions that fulfilled
the customers needs.

This same flow chart could be made more detailed as I drilled down.

And this was then used as the requirements for the platform architecture as well
as the initial priority list of RIs.
